Smart Grids will turn our energy systems into an interactive network connecting power stations, meters and home appliances and consumers.

For that matter, standards and interoperability are central issues to enable a fast and reliable deployment of smart grids.
Following a Board Hell's kitchen session in March 2010, ETSI kicked off several initiatives to analyze the standardization landscape and start elaborating a value proposition. Today, the time is right for the Board team to present its findings to ETSI membership and assess together the best roadmap to meet industry, policy and regulatory requirements altogether.
The Workshop on 14th June at ETSI included:
- a comprehensive review of the multiple initiatives that took place in the last semester, as well as ETSIs involvement in Smart Grids activities including : EU High Level Task Force, NIST SGIP, external workshops etc.
- an analysis on how to leverage the strengths of existing technical bodies and build the most attractive offer in order to build a community with utilities, TSOs, DSOs, service companies and all relevant industry players
- the critical role of Interoperability and the role ETSI CTI can play
- information on the upcoming EC mandate on Smart Grids.
The overall objective of the day was to discuss and specify ETSI role, strategy and tactics for Smart Grids standardization.
The workshop was open to all ETSI members and selected speakers.
