ETSI is proud to have a leading role in the development of mobile communication technologies. The Institute has been in the front line of this work, from the development of the Global System for Mobile communicationTM (GSM) specifications, through the evolved technologies such as the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution (EDGE), to 3rd Generation and beyond.
GSM and its evolved technologies now serve around 2.5 billion users throughout the world. That sort of success would be impossible without standards, and illustrates the huge potential of well-managed standardization programmes.
User demand, drawn from growing experience with information and communication technologies generally, is driving the mobile communication industry to develop faster, more efficient and more comprehensive mobile services. These have resulted in today's 3rd Generation (3G) technologies, and ETSI was a founding partner in 3GPP, a global standards collaboration. As user expectations continue to grow, ETSI aims to remain very much part of the evolution of 3G and beyond.
